Following his visit in September last year, Dr. Klaus Sinram of Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) came up to the Kitakami ILC candidate site again, and this time brought three colleagues: Dr. Thomas Schoerner-Sadenius, Dr. Uwe Schneekloth, and Dipl. Engineer Richard Stromhagen. (Click pictures to see full-size versions)

The four, in Japan under the Europe-Japan Accelerator Development Exchange Programme (E-JADE), left their hotel in Sendai in the morning of March 17 and hopped on to a bullet train, arriving in Ichinoseki half an hour later. After a brief look around the station and vicinity, we moved to a nearby brewery and restaurant. We received a guided tour of the brewery and then entered the restaurant, where we sat in a beautiful tatami mat room. On the menu was mochi – small balls of pounded, sticky rice covered with various toppings – and some craft beer. While enjoying the local cuisine and beverages, conversation turned to the ILC. I mentioned Ichinoseki has made the ILC a central pillar of its town planning, and spoke of efforts made to date as well as new ones coming in the year ahead.
After lunch we proceeded east to Kesennuma on the coast. On the way, questions came up about how much snow fell in the area in winter, if there were plans to work on the road where vehicles carrying ILC equipment would pass, and so on. I explained that snow fall was not heavy in many parts of Ichinoseki, and that a new bypass is in the process of being built where the existing road is too narrow.
Large ship docked for repair
In Kesennuma we visited Kidoura Shipyard Co. Ltd, and were briefed by the company president about Mirai Ships, a new company formed last May by four shipbuilding and related companies. Mirai Ships is scheduled to build a new shipyard, and they have positioned the ILC in the center of their long-term vision. We then climbed onto a large ship which was being repaired, and took a look inside and around while learning about the capabilities of the port, where container ships would dock for unloading, and so on.

As with last September, it was great to show DESY personnel around the Kitakami candidate site. We hope to see many researchers from both in and out of Japan, and will continue getting information out about the attractions of the ILC candidate site.

ドイツDESY研究者が北上サイトを再訪［14号］ ネイト・ヒル（一関市）昨年９月に北上サイトを訪問したドイツ電子シンクロトロン（ＤＥＳＹ）のクラウス・シンラム氏は、３月17日、トーマス・シューネル・サデ二アス氏、ウバ・シニクアス氏、リチャード・ストロマゴン氏の３名の研究者を連れて、北上サイトを訪問しました。
日・EU加速器開発交流プログラムで来日した一行は、宿泊先の仙台市を出発し、新幹線で30分後、一ノ関駅に到着しました。駅構内や駅周辺を見学後、市街地にある蔵元レストラン世嬉の一に移動しました。酒の蔵博物館を見学後、世嬉の一の和室で、一関地方の郷土料理である餅膳や地ビールを味わいながら懇談。私は、一関市がILCを基軸としたまちづくりを進めていること、ILC実現に向けた取組について説明しました。
昼食後、車で気仙沼市に移動し、移動中の車内で「冬はどれくらい雪が降るのか。」「ILCの大型部品を搬送する車両が通れる道路の整備計画はあるのか。」といった質問が寄せられ、一関市の大半は冬場の積雪が多くないこと、道路の幅員が狭い区間はバイパスの整備が予定されていることなどを説明しました。
気仙沼市では木戸浦造船を訪問し、木戸浦社長から、「昨年５月に４つの造船業者が合併しみらい造船が設立されたこと」、「新会社で新たな造船所を整備予定であること」、「ILCを新会社の長期ビジョンの中核に位置付けていること」などの説明がありました。その後、修理中の大型船の船内を見学し、研究者から、気仙沼商港の港湾機能やコンテナ船の寄港場所などの質問があり、木戸浦社長が丁寧に回答し、研究者の皆さんは理解を深めていました。
クラウス氏らには、昨年９月に引き続き、北上サイトを訪問いただき、大変良かったです。私たちは、ぜひ国内外の研究者の方々に北上サイトに足を運んでもらいたいので、引き続き、ILC建設候補地の魅力などの情報をお伝えしていきます。
