In Iwate Prefecture, local train lines such as the Sanriku Railway, made famous in the TV drama Amachan are plentiful. Of those lines, this time around we will be introducing the charms of the JR Kitakami Line and the town located on the line, Nishiwaga, in the southern region of the prefecture.
The JR Kitakami Line is a local train line that runs from Kitakami City and passes through Nishiwaga Town, ending in Yokote City in Akita Prefecture. It is cherished by the locals as a line closely associated with the region, such as by students commuting to school in the cities and towns located along the line. The JR Kitakami Line runs across Lake Kinshu, one of the “Selected 100 Dam Lakes,” allowing one to enjoy the natural scenery of each season. While the line was first built in 1920, it did not become the full train line running through 3 municipalities we know of now until November 15, 1924. The 100th anniversary of the full train line opening will soon be upon us this year, in 2024.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the full opening, in November 2023, JR East implemented its first 4 day long free train ride campaign to promote the JR Kitakami Line both within and outside Iwate Prefecture. 5,000 tickets were prepared at first and ran out on the same day, leading to a total of 6,500 tickets being distributed in the end with 5,295 passengers riding the train throughout the period, a 2.8 times increase compared to usual. In addition to having to add extra cars and run extra trains, a welcome event was held at Hottoyuda Station in Nishiwaga Town. The never before seen level of hustle and bustle led to a great deal of promotion for the JR Kitakami Line.
Nishiwaga Town is where Hottoyuda Station is located, the only station in the country with a hot spring inside the station building.
The town is located in the mid-west part of the prefecture and is rich with nature, being surrounded on three sides by the Ou Mountains, and is known as having some of the heaviest snowfall throughout Japan. As a tourist destination, the town is known for Lake Kinshu and offers a superb view of the surrounding trees. Woods submerged by the melting of the snow can be seen in the spring, and scenery of vibrant red colored leaves can be enjoyed in the fall. From July to August, the Lake Kinshu waterfall is lit up at night and is known as the “Light Up Night View Heritage.”
From canoe tours and hiking between spring to fall, and skiing and snowball fight tournaments in the winter, many activities are available to enjoy year round. If you are interested, we recommend experiencing it for yourself (A “Southern Iwate Area Marathon and Activity Map” is available on the official Iwate Prefecture website). Nishiwaga is a town filled with many charms and many ways to enjoy the sights, lodging, and food. You can soak in distinctive hot springs within the traditional inns around the Yuda Onsenkyo area, enjoy local specialties including Nishi Warabi bracken and Yuda yogurt, or perhaps have a sip of Yukinochikara wheat beer from the Helios Distillery located in town.
For those of you debating whether to come or not, 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the full opening of the JR Kitakami Line, and both the prefecture and the cities and towns surrounding the train line are currently in the midst of planning campaigns and events to promote the occasion. Iwate Prefecture is also collaborating with Television Iwate Corporation to help spread word on the charms of the line and the surrounding municipalities (like Kitakami City and Nishiwaga Town) to more people both within and outside the prefecture. Events such as collecting a series of stamps from each sightseeing destination, photo contests for superb scenery, and a hashtag campaign on social media will all begin from July 19th. JR北上線と西和賀町の魅力岩手県にはドラマの「あまちゃん」などで有名となった三陸鉄道をはじめとしたローカル線が多くあります。その中でも今回は県南地域のJR北上線と沿線にある西和賀町の魅力についてご紹介します。
JR北上線は北上市から西和賀町、秋田県の横手市を通るローカル線です。沿線市町の生徒が通学に使用するなど、地域に密着した路線として地元に愛されています。また、JR北上線は『ダム湖100選』に選ばれた錦秋湖上を横断する路線のため、四季折々の自然風景を楽しむことができます。1920年に開業しましたが今の３市町を通る路線（全線開通）となったのは1924年11月15日であり、今年2024年に全線開通100周年を迎えます。（写真①②北上線風景写真）
JR北上線では全線開通100周年を記念して、JR北上線を県内外にPRする取組として、昨年2023年11月にJR東日本では初となる４日間の無料乗車キャンペーンが実施されました。当初用意した乗車票5,000枚は即日でなくなり、最終的には6,500枚が配布され、期間中の乗車人数は通常の2.8倍にあたる5,295人となりました。車両の追加や臨時列車が走ったほか、JR北上線のほっとゆだ駅（西和賀町）では歓迎イベントが開催されるなど、かつてないにぎわいを見せ、県内外へのJR北上線のPRへとつながりました。（写真③イベントの様子）
ここで、全国でも例をみない温泉付きの駅舎である「ほっとゆだ駅」のある西和賀町についてご紹介させていただきます。（写真④ほっとゆだ駅）
西和賀町は岩手県中西部にあり、三方を奥羽山脈に囲われた自然豊かな町であり、日本有数の豪雪地帯でも知られております。観光名所としては錦秋湖があり、木々に囲われた絶景が楽しめるほか、雪解け時期の春には水没林が見られ、秋には鮮やかな紅葉が楽しめます。また、７月～10月は錦秋湖大滝がライトアップされその美しさから、「ライトアップ夜景遺産」に認定されています。
